Debra has a love of teaching and was a university professor for over 30 years. She still teaches, but now it’s jewelry classes instead of business classes! She has certifications from Rio Grande, Levels 1 through 3 from PMC Connection, Level 1 Instructor from Art Clay World, partially-completed Senior Instructor from Art Clay World, Camp PMC 101, Camp PMC 201, Camp PMC 103, Camp PMC 104, and Camp PMC 105. She strongly believes in the Certification Program as a way to provide validation and credibility to one’s skills and understanding of Metal Clay.
She currently teaches a variety of classes in Metal Clay in her home studio as well as virtually, via ZOOM. Additionally, she teaches classes in Pearl-Knotting and Kumihimo, always keeping in mind the successful combination of these techniques with designs in Metal Clay.
Debra’s core philosophy was inherited from her father, who was quick to remind her that “when you stop learning, you stop living”. True to his words, he continued to take classes through his mid-eighties, always knowing there was more to learn, as his interests were many. Both her mother and her father had never-ending lists of projects to be worked on, and skills that they wanted to learn.
This way of viewing life had a major impact on Debra, as can be seen in her own strong beliefs on education. Whether it is college degrees or jewelry certifications, she believes that you do what you can to further your education in those areas that are of interest to you. She credits these strong beliefs with the pleasure she derives from teaching and finds it particularly rewarding when she sees the excitement demonstrated by her students as they master another technique!
